The Tarka Trail will take you through some of the most fascinating, most beautiful and most scenic towns and countryside North Devon has to offer. We have complied list of some points of interest that might inspire your walk or your day out.

Barnstaple town

Barnstaple is the main town of north Devon, and the oldest borough in the UK. This historic town offers a variety of shops, restaurants, hotels and attractions and is the central hub for the Tarka Trail.


Crow Point

Crow point is an unspoiled haven of natural beauty and wildlife. An area of beach where two rivers meet at an estuary leading out into the sea.



Bideford, known locally as ‘The little white town’ is an attractive town on the west bank of the River Torridge, where the river begins to widen to form the estuary.



A traditional bustling market town and the gateway to Dartmoor.


Eggesford Forest

Eggesford Forest is a large and enchanting forest through which the South Loop of the Tarka Trail runs.


Meeth Quarry

Bike trails, easy access trails and paths take you through a landscape with an industrial history.


Halsdon Nature Reserve

Waymarked walks weave down through woodland leading you to the banks and water meadows of the River Torridge.



Great Torrington is a market town rich in dark history yet surrounded by beautiful unspoilt countryside in the heart of Tarka country.


Ilfracombe / Slade

The Northern loop of the Tarka Trail follows the South West Coastal path into the picturesque fishing town of Ilfracombe, then exits via Slade Valley passing two reservoirs.


Woody Bay Station

The Award Winning Woody Bay Station is an original, restored Railway station situated between Lynton & Barnstaple
